How a hand works
- Deal: each player gets 13 cards, and spades are always trumps.
- Bid: starting left of the dealer, everyone bids how many tricks their partnership will win, or Nil to win none.
- Play: follow the suit that was led; if you cannot, play any card. Spades cannot be led until one has been played.
- Score: meet your bid for 10 points per bid trick plus one per extra trick (a bag); miss it and lose 10 per bid trick. First side to 500 wins.
Three ways to play
- Classic Standard 52-card Spades with nil and blind nil bids. Four players, two partnerships, first to 500 points wins.
- Joker The two red deuces are replaced by two jokers, played as the two highest spades: the big joker beats the little joker, which beats the 2 of spades.
- New York City Team-wide bidding of 4 to 10, no nil, spades cannot be led for the first three tricks, taking all 13 tricks wins the game, and two consecutive sets lose it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Spades Online really free?
Yes. You can play every mode for free in your browser. There is nothing to download and no account to create.
How many players does a game need?
Spades is played by four people in two partnerships. Any seat that has no human player is filled by a bot, so you can play alone, with one friend, or with three.
How do I play with friends?
Create a private room, then send the four-letter room code or the invite link. Your friends open it in their browser and sit down at your table.
What happens if I lose my connection?
Your seat is held for a while so you can reconnect and carry on. If you stay away, a bot plays your cards until you return.
Where is my game record saved?
Only on your own device, in your browser storage. Clearing site data removes it, and nothing is uploaded to an account.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. The layout adapts to phones, tablets and desktops, and you can add the game to your home screen to open it like an app, even with a weak connection.
